News on Campus

We are pleased to offer an array of assemblies to our students each year. The Music Center Education Division in Los Angeles has an extensive selection of artistic performances from which to choose and we have selected a variety of shows to delight your child. This month, students will enjoy jigs and reels from the Scottish and Irish Highlands by Tinkers on Tuesday, October 12, at 8:45 a.m. Parents are invited to attend as well.

Reformation Chapel at 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27 – More than 500 years ago, Martin Luther’s writing, preaching, teaching, music and personal efforts helped to establish a reformed Christian Church in Europe. Scriptures were translated into the languages of the people, hymns were written to familiar tunes, education for the general public was established and encouraged, and personal responsibility for knowing one’s own spiritual rights and welfare became evident.

Our classes entertain the XYZ Senior Citizens at their monthly luncheon. In September, the sixth grade entertained, and the October presentation will be done by the fifth grade. Our neighborhood elderly, Solheim residents and church members thoroughly enjoy the kids performing each month throughout the school year, since some of them never see children or have no grandchildren or great grandchildren of their own.

Mrs. Huleis welcomes parents to her monthly “Chat with the Principal” which begins on Friday, October 1, at 8:45 a.m. in the Library. This is your opportunity to ask questions, express concerns or share information. This will continue on a monthly basis on the first Friday.

Every year at this time, Pastor Glen Egertson schedules classes for First Communion Training. These will begin on Thursday, September 30 after school, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. and repeated on Saturday, October 2, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Families are also invited to attend the 11:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday which is designed for families with small children and features a children’s event called “Walk by the Water” that is great for the spiritual growth of our children. If you don’t have a church home, check us out!

Twice each year, Target donates up to 1% of purchases made using their Target Visa and Target Guest Card to schools eligible for their “Take Charge of Education Program”. In September we received a check for $46.42 which represents our portion of purchases.

If you are interested in supporting Salem by this means, you can sign up by calling 1-800-316-6142, going on-line to target.com/tcoe or stopping by the kiosk in your favorite Target store. We thank you for your support!

THANK YOU to President, Randi Bennett and the PTO for all their hard work during the first few weeks of school. Lots of great things are happening around Salem and we are lucky to have such a dedicated group of parents!

REMINDERS:

  • Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. Please arrive a few minutes before so that your child(ren) can be in class when roll is called and class begins. Please help us to maintain our regular schedule. Begin your morning activities a few minutes earlier if you find arrival by 8:30 is difficult.
  • Thanks for your continued careful driving in the parking lot. Please continue to watch for children who might run out in front of you!
  • Remember to check in at the school office and obtain a visitor’s pass when visiting the school between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • '''PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR CHILD OUT OF DAY CARE WITH TIME OF DEPARTURE AND YOUR INITIALS. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!
When making payments, please remember that THE OFFICE ACCEPTS CHECKS OR MONEY ORDERS ONLY. NO CASH.

Lutheran Social Services of Southern California distributes food to some 6,000 individuals annually through their Food Pantry. Their supplies are currently very low, so Salem Lutheran Church and School, through the Evangelism/Outreach Committee, will be supporting them with a Food Drive from October 10 through 24. The following items are needed and can be brought to Chapel on Wednesday, October 13 and placed in the LSS containers in the Narthex:

Canned Goods – soup, fruit, corn, green beans, chili, baked beans, Spaghetti-Os, ravioli, tuna, Spam, Vienna sausages. Dry goods: Mac & cheese, Rice-a-Roni, instant mashed potatoes. Snacks: Cheese & Crackers, cereal and granola bars, potato chip variety packs, fruit roll-ups, Pop-Tarts and juice boxes. Questions? Call Pam Shea at 353-4854.

Life Touch Photography has acquired Arabesque Photography and will be taking our students’ pictures this year. We are very impressed with the services they offer, including a free ID card for parents to keep in their wallet in the event they are separated from their child. Individual pictures will be taken in free dress on Friday, October 1 and class pictures in uniform are on Tuesday, October 5.
