Godspeed and farewell to our departing teachers Mrs. Jennifer Hudson (Spanish) and Mr. Ricardo Calderon (P.E.). They will be moving on to new opportunities next year. We are also bidding a bittersweet goodbye to our dear Mr. Fred Boice, who will be moving to Tucson, Arizona to be closer to parents, brothers and sisters. He will be teaching sixth grade at Desert Christian Middle School. Mr. Boice has been our sixth grade teacher for the past ten years. His favorite part of the job has been getting to know the amazing students who have come through his classes. He has enjoyed working with the staff and parents of Salem and will miss everyone. He would love to hear from you! E-mail him at fkboice@mac.com. Staff Appreciation Week is May 3 through 7. This is an opportunity to say thank you to the teachers and other staff who give so much to our children. Dr. Craig Woodson has created more than 130 instruments that reflect the cultures of Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas and he will be bringing some of them to Salem on Tuesday, May 4 at 8:45 a.m. There is lots of audience participation as students help build a "World Orchestra", while exploring the origin, science and techniques of homemade musical instruments. Salem students in grades 3 through 6 will be participating in the essay contest sponsored by Solheim Lutheran Home to celebrate National Homes for the Aging Week May 9 through 15. The essay topics are: imagine spending a day with a grandparent and what you would do or ways you would make the world a better place for the elderly. Winning essays will be read at an award ceremony at Solheim Lutheran Home on Wednesday, May 12. Our annual Open House and Science Fair will take place on Tuesday May 11. We will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary where the children will present our annual concert. Following the concert, please tour all classrooms to see the children's work on display and visit the Science Fair in the gym and see the remarkable projects by our Salem students! SPRING CLEANING: Parents are encouraged to check through the lost and found to round up missing jackets, sweaters, stuffed animals, hair accessories, etc. They will be on display after school on the playground on Friday, May 7. Unclaimed items will be donated to the Goodwill. A reminder to write your child's name on all apparel worn to school. If a name is on it, we will return it to its rightful owner!! CONGRATULATIONS TO JULIA BAKERINK, 4TH GRADE: We are proud to announce that our own Julia Bakerink has been selected to train with ice skating silver medallist and two-time world champion, Linda Fratianne. Julia has been skating for the past two years and was hand-chosen by Linda for her exceptional talent. She trains five days per week in El Segundo and she is on the ice at 5:30 a.m. Way to go, Julia! We'll be watching for you at the Olympics!!! Salem Lutheran School Summer Program. Registration is now underway for our popular summer program. The program runs from June 21 through August 27. Forms and detailed information are available in the school office. The summer program is also available to non-Salem students. The 5th and 6th grade classes will be on their annual trips to El Camino Pines and Washington DC respectively during the week of May 17 through 21. Your prayers for a safe and educational trip for our students, faculty and chaperones will be appreciated. Thank You. A special thank you goes to our 2003-2004 PTO Board, Brianne Bird, Dorine Albarian, Joanne Weidman, and Christina Kovarik, for volunteering their time and energy this year. Thanks to all committee chairs and the parents for supporting all PTO functions. back to top |
