News on Campus

In November, our fifth grade class visited Windsor Manor, a residential care facility for the elderly. They took a tour and each student met their “ElderMentor”, an older friend whom they interviewed to learn about their life. They also shared stories about their own life with their ElderMentor and will return in December to share a story they have written. Through this activity, the Health Ministry staff and our administration hope that students will develop respect, listening and creative writing skills to help strengthen their confidence and comfort with older adults. Our sixth grade class will also continue their established relationship with the residents of Solheim Lutheran Home.

Mrs. Huleis will host her “Chat with the Principal” at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, December 3 in the Library. Take this opportunity to meet with her and ask questions, make comments or learn more about our wonderful school!

A reminder that we are now accepting applications for the 2005-2006 school year. Families are encouraged to complete the Application for Admission and submit it to the Office soon, as space is limited!

At our special chapel on Wednesday, the 15th, children will bring a gift forward to be given to an orphan his or her own age at Hogar Para Los Ninos in Colonia Guerrero, Mexico.

There is a particular need for socks, underwear and T-shirts. There are also certain “wants”: the little boys like “pocket toys” and the girls like hair “things” and writing/coloring supplies. Rather than swapping gifts with each other, it has become a tradition for Salem students to bring a gift for an orphan.

The Pereaus, who are full-time volunteer directors for the orphanage, will take our gifts to Mexico. They ask that they not be wrapped so that the staff can designate gifts to appropriate sizes, ages, etc. Wrapping paper, ribbon, etc., would also be very useful. The Students and Faculty of Salem Lutheran School cordially invite you to attend their annual Christmas Service:

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Tuesday, December 21 at 7:00 pm

Come and experience Christmas through the eyes of children as students in our Kindergarten through Sixth grade classes express God’s annual message of peace through the fine arts…including music, drama, art, and prose. The offering collected at this evening service will be donated to Compassion International to support unsponsored children.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

A great time was enjoyed by all at the PTO’s “Parents’ Night Out”. A big thank you goes to the Mulders who offered their beautiful home for this event and to Randi Bennett, Teri DeSales, Lauri Egertson and the MANY volunteers who spent countless hours making this a BIG success.

Thanks to our school families who helped support Lutheran Social Services of Southern California by donating food to help fill their pantry. Their ministry to benefit low-income persons who come to them for help has benefited tremendously from your generosity.

Christmas Vacation begins Wednesday, December 22. Day care will be in session, with the exception of Christmas Eve afternoon and New Year’s Eve afternoon. We will return to school on Wednesday, January 5.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish our Salem families a blessed, peaceful Christmas and a joyous New Year.

REMINDERS:

  • Please make every effort to help your child arrive to school on time – school starts at 8:30 a.m.
  • Very important: Please sign your child IN and OUT of Day Care every day for accurate record-keeping.
  • When shopping at Office Depot, be sure to give them Salem’s ID #70008444.
  • Please drive carefully in the pick-up line. There have been some close calls recently!
