News on Campus
Thanks to our families who turned in their re-enrollment forms promptly! We are looking forward to another great school year in 2005-2006 with our new and returning families.
Godspeed and farewell to Miss Emily Hudson, our second grade teacher, who left Salem at the end of February. We would like to welcome back Mrs. Jackie Ramm who will be replacing Miss Hudson for the remainder of the school year. Mrs. Ramm has been a teacher at Salem for 15 years, 14 of which were in the second grade. She is long-term Salem Lutheran Church member and has served on the School Board, as well as various other church committees. She has a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Michigan.
Our Music Center performance this month is entitled Great Leap, which illuminates the Asian, Latino and African American experience in the personal history stories of A Slice of Rice, Frijoles and Greens. Come and enjoy the program at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12.
Southern California Sensory Screening will make their annual visit to Salem on Tuesday, April 12 at 10 a.m. Students in kindergarten, second and fifth grades are required by the State of California to have hearing and vision tests to detect and report to parents any potential problems in their early stages. Parents are invited to participate in this on-campus program for a nominal cost or have their physicians perform the tests and provide a copy of the results to the School Office. Information has been sent home and extras are available in the office.
Stanford Testing will take place the week of April 18. These tests are an important indicator of the fine academic program we provide at Salem, and this is an opportunity for students to exhibit their knowledge and progress during the school year. We ask for your cooperation in the following areas to make sure your child does his or her best on the tests:
- Make sure your child gets 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night
- Provide your child with a healthy, nutritious breakfast each morning.
- Make every effort to have your child in school on time every day. Please refrain from making doctor or dentist appointments that may conflict with testing.
Lutheran Schools Week was a success with students participating in the neighborhood march, essay writing, flag making and mismatched clothes day! In addition, we sent three LARGE boxes of toiletry items to the chaplain in Kuwait for distribution to the men and women in our armed services. They were shipped in mid-March and should arrive in the beginning of April. Thanks to all of our families who donated these items and the money to ship them.
The Jog-a-thon has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 23 at Hoover High School.
The Science Fair will be held on Tuesday, May 17, during our annual Open House. We are asking our students to select a project that will present what they have learned this year at school. Participation in grades 3 through 6 is mandatory, and all projects will be graded by classroom teachers.
Students in grades JK through 2nd will be presenting class projects guided by their teachers. All students are encouraged to start planning for this event. Participation ribbons will be awarded to all.
REMINDERS:
- Please make every effort to help your child arrive to school on time – school starts at 8:30 a.m.
- Very important: Please sign your child IN and OUT of Day Care every day for accurate record-keeping.
- When shopping at Office Depot, be sure to give them Salem’s ID #70008444.
- Please drive carefully in the pick-up line. There have been some close calls recently!
Day Care Reminder:
This is to remind our families who use Day Care that school holidays are not included in the monthly Day Care fee. For example, if your child is attending Day Care on Lincoln’s Birthday, there is a $20.00 charge, which is the Occasional Holiday rate on your Tuition sheet.
