ART

   Welcome!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year, which will be filled with colorful and beautiful art created by your children!
Last year students expressed their own opinion about art and especially about their favorite piece of art!  This year children will research, find and bring a picture of their favorite photographer (first quarter), architect (second quarter), sculptor (third quarter) and painter (fourth quarter), to school. Students will be asked to report on their chosen artist and write:

1 sentence for the 1st graders,
2 sentences for the 2nd graders,
3 sentences for the 3rd graders,
4 sentences for the 4th graders,
5 sentences  for the 5th graders,
and 6 sentences for the 6th graders

Children will not only learn how to describe art and learn theory of art but most of all they will use that theory in practice. Throughout the school year the children will form their own opinion about art, why art is important to them and why they love creating it.

This year, children in fourth, fifth and sixth grades will create a mini-book on a relatively well-known artist (living or deceased) to be completed by the first week of December. I will send the instructions and guidelines for the report home with the children later this week.
Children in the lower grades will write an art book report (second grade 7 sentences and third grade 12 sentences). This project will be due in January.

Art lessons at Salem Lutheran School are based on the Church Liturgical Calendar as well as certain national holidays and remembrances such as Martin Luther King, Thanksgiving and Mothers Day. Other lessons are designed to build art skills and appreciation of art and artists, both classic and modern. Whenever possible, student artwork is displayed in the church sanctuary.

I am hoping for parent volunteers in my art classes. You could help out when your child is scheduled or for any other of the classes. Please let me know if you might consider aiding us for an hour or so once a week. I also need volunteers to help me when we display the children’s art. Please contact me at the school or by phone (818-321-8856) to discuss this.

Art Report 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade

My art students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades will be required to write a biography on a relatively well-known artist (living or deceased). Students will present their research in the form of a mini-book.
The due date is December 2nd.
It is too hard to work on the project just the last few days before the due date, so I divided the project into parts and every two-week period represents one part of the project. This year I ask for your supervision and your signature after each part of the project is finished. This is not an easy project and your help is more than welcome! You can use it as a family fun activity during weekends but please keep it as your help, not as your work.
